The St. Helena Parish Jail

The St. Helena Parish Jail is under the leadership and direction of Warden Marvin Schaffer.  He is ulltimately responsible for the care, custody and control of the inmates, protection of their rights and the delivery of the inmates’ medical services.

The facility has the capacity to hold up to 56 inmates and receives all persons who are arrested in St. Helena Parish, plus is a holding facility for other parishes and DOC inmates. Prisoners remain in jail unless released on bond, set free by the courts or sentenced.

The St. Helena Parish jail provides a safe and secure environment for the inmates, while also providing them their basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, medical care, mental health care and their religious needs.

A supervised inmate work force provides maintenance within the facility and the grounds as well as manual labor to various Parish agencies, Community Service Projects, Litter Crew, etc.

The Transportation Unit provides safe and secure transportation of prisoners to and from court, to medical appointments as well as prisoner extradition from other jurisdictions

Personnel assigned to court security are in place to protect the integrity of court proceedings and maintain courtroom decorum.  The process begins with the security screening of individuals entering the building.  This involves the application of security procedures and measures designed to deter, detect and/or prevent weapons and contraband from entering the building.  This unit is responsible for monitoring the courtroom in order to provide safety for court personnel, jurors, victims, prisoners and the general public.

The Jail’s Division Administrative Support is responsible for the day to day functions of the facility: Classification, Intake, Idenfication, Data Entry, Records Retention, Transport Control, Housing, Visitation, and other crucial functions.
